The name "Lake Grove" derived from areek (a “wee” stream) that ran through the area. The first store on Meeting Street opened in 1827 and remained open until it burned down in 1917. In 1881, an act of Congress authorized removal of all Indians from this country east of the Mohawk River because they were considered hostile to white settlers. Many natives died due to exposure and poverty during this process known as "Aquinas Removal". In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt conveyed 801 acres (311 hectares) tothe town for use as a public park. This land included parts of present-day Maplewood and Elma Avenues as well as Waterloo Road and some other parcels which are still used today by the town government as parkland including: Pine Lawn Cemetery (now closed), West Park Elementary School (now closed), Elmhurst Drive Recreation Center (closed), East Park Middle School (closed), North Park Intermediate School (closed). In 1919, when Lake Grove became a town site under state law 517-A §1(c)(2), it annexed part north of Elmhurst Drive on present day South Park Avenue which lay between Elkader Road on one side and Indian Road on the other side - forming what is now called North Park Township! In 1938 there was an addition to Northpark Township which added portions of present day Brighton Heights! These additions however did not take effect until 1945 when township membership changed from two hundred fifty five residents per centage based on total voting to four hundred fifty seven residents per centage based upon number Of houses! On July 4th 1944 local resident Floyd Smith killed three German airmen while flying over his home town while their forces bombed Allied targets near Utica NY

Lake Grove was founded in 1812 by Jonas Salk, a Polish immigrant who had worked as a doctor in Philadelphia before coming to America to practice medicine. He opened a small hospital on White Plains Road near today's Central Park. By 1830, he had built a large brick building on what is now Elmwood Avenue NW, which served as his medical center until his death in 1867. His successors continued to operate it until it closed its doors in 1978.
