During World War II, many residents took part in production at nearby munitions plants such as Union Carbide and Phelps Dodge. Many of these people also remain resident in Lakes Grove today through their businesses or local organizations such as Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). Lake Grove has been consistently ranked one of America's most liveable communities since 2002 by Forbes magazine. In 1811, General James Wilkinson negotiated with Nicholas Flushing to purchase 1/4 mile (0.6 kilometer) of beach along the southern shoreline of Lake Ontario for $5 per annum ($240 per year). This purchase gave rise to Lakeside Heights development near today's Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus north of Interstate 87 and State Street in downtown Buffalo
In 1812, the area that is now Lake Grove was part of the towns of Amherst and Northampton. The first white person to live in what is nowLake Grove was Timothy Dwight, who bought land from the Mohawk tribe in 1798. In 1814, a group of men from New York City founded a Methodist church in what is nowLake Grove. In 1817, Lake Grove became an incorporated town. The first post office was opened in what is nowLake Grove on October 1, 1817. In 1865, the Erie Railroad built a line through what is nowLake Grove and connected it with Buffalo and Niagara Falls. This made it easier for people to get around and helped make Lake Grove more industrialized than it would have been otherwise. In 1937, the town set up a committee to develop plans for development around the lake. These plans called for increasing acreage within the town limits and also included plans for creating new housing developments as well as expanding businesses throughout the community. The town continued to grow during World War II because there were many soldiers stationed in and around Lake Grove after they were drafted into service. Many businesses closed during World War II due to wartime regulation but soon reopened thanks to postwar demand. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, much attention was given to efforts by local residents to control graffiti on public property in their community- something which had never before been done in this area. After years of effort by locals, graffiti removal began taking place throughoutthe community starting within certain areas while others received less attention due to their higher value properties not being targeted as heavily as other areas did initially
