Lake Grove is a small town in upstate New York, located about 20 miles northwest of Syracuse. The population was 5,992 at the 2010 census. It is made up ofadjacent hamlets and rural tracts that are spread out over a wide area on the north side of Lake Ontario. The name "Lake Grove" comes from Indian words meaning "moonlight pond." The first settler in what is now Lake Grove was Joseph Hecker who bought land in 1792. By 1824, there were 9 families living in the village, which had a total population of 104. In 1828, John Prentice built a sawmill on the west side of the river near present-day Main Street and developed it into a milltown called Prenticeville. In 1832, Samuel Morse moved his family to what is now Park Road and started an iron works there known as Morse Iron Works. By 1836, there were 150 people living in Lake Grove with a total population of 2272. By 1860, all but five families lived in the village; its population totaled 6226. At that time it was part of Herkimer County and had two stores (one operated by John Higginson)and one post office (opened October 14th). On November 3rd, 1860 voters approved annexation by Clinton County (added due to lack of opposition). In 1865 when Union troops burned down Herkimer County courthouse during their raid through Upstate New York they destroyed much valuable property including mills owned by farmers like George Armstrong Custer and William Troup along with other important infrastructure such as roadways and bridges across Lake Ontario including Custer's Mill Bridge which still stands today============================================= On November 3rd 1865 residents voted to add Lakes Grove to Clinton County after being without representation for over 10 years due to claim by Canandaigua Township on behalf of Seneca Nation

Lake Grove was established in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques de Lesseps, the Governor of New York. The name is derived from a large body of water located near the town. The first settler in what is now Lake Grove was Nicholas Dearman, who purchased land from the Native Americans in 1795. However, it was not until 1805 when John Dingwall acquired additional property and began to build a home on it. In 1824, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt donated some land to the town for use as a public square. The first school in town opened in 1830. In 1865, Lake Grove became one of seven towns that formed the Village of West Nyack. In 1916, after years of decay and neglect, Mayor Harry Wessels proposed that the village be leased to an organization called "The Lake Grove Improvement Association". This group had been set up as a means of restoring and preserving much of what had once been part of Lacroix Parklands which bordered on what is now known as Main Street in Lake Grove. After many months of debate and community hearings, on May 2nd, 1916 the village board voted unanimously to lease the parkland to "The Lake Grove Improvement Association". This new entity soon began making major contributions to lake golfing and fishing facilities; expanding recreational opportunities for residents; developing plans for beautifying and landscaping most important aspects of Lacroix Parklands; working with local businesses to create jobs within their boundaries; creating programs that would promote conservation; even establishing a summer job program for children (now known as “Summer Jobs”). The first Europeans to view the area that is now Lake Grove were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew in 1524. The first permanent settler was John Winthrop, who arrived in 1629. By 1776, the town had grown to over 100 people. In 1814, a group of investors formed a company to purchase 2,000 acres of land west of town for $2,500 and began construction on what would become the first commercial building in Lake Grove- the Post Office. The town’s population grew rapidly due to its location near the Erie Canal and new industry such as lumbering and farming. Growth slowed during World War I when most residents left for military service; however, growth resumed during World War II with the influx of veterans. Today, Lake Grove is a small but vibrant community with many businesses and services available.
