The history of Lake Grove begins with its founding as a small German immigrant settlement on Long Island Sound. At that time, there were very few places on Long Island where Germans could live freely. These early settlers were primarily men who had come overland from Germany or who had emigrated through Ellis Island. Many of these early settlers were farmers who started out gardening or raising chickens for their own consumption rather than selling their crops to others. Over time, however, some of these early pioneers began to build themselves some homes and businesses on what would become known as Seawall Road which ran parallel to Loch Lomond Creek (now called Rte 236). Eventually enough Germans came westward along this road that they began creating their own villages along Loch Lomond Creek (now called Rte 236). One such village was Kapp's Landing on the southern shoreline of Long Island Sound opposite Sandy Hook Point across Nassau Bay (now lie New Hyde Park and East Hampton). This village thrived until 1686 when English forces destroyed it during King James' colonial reign as part of his campaign against Dutch colonization on American soil。 From then until 1768 when the present day post office was established at Grovesville Court House by Amos Kendall (), all mail passed through Grovesville Court House before finally reaching inland destinations like Albany or Kingston each weekdays (). Thereafter only occasional shipments arrived at Grovesville Court House because regular ferry service between Great Lakes ports and Albany now made getting goods and food much easier than ever before (). Additionally three brick piers now remain outside present dayGrovesville which once housed several large warehouses used to process mails arriving from all parts Of America . Eventually everyday travelers stopped at either Green Cove Springs or Saybrook for refreshment () so that lakeshore villagers could watch boats docking AND pick up passengers disembarking from vessels moored at various points along what is now known as Southport Boulevard (); making this one stop “the heart”of Grovevoile Village for many years

The first permanent settler in what is now Lake Grove was John Smith in 1784. The post office was established at Lake Grove on October 12, 1784, by order of President George Washington. It was renamed Poughkeepsie on November 5, 1789. In 1825 it became part of the newly created town of Westchester and remained so until its dissolution as a township in 1983. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land.
