In 1868, Lackawanna was founded by Samuel G. Hargrave and Amos T. Merrill as a town in the Niagara Peninsula of New York State. In 1875, the town voted to change its name to Lackawanna Falls after the falls on the Niagara River. The name stuck and Lackawanna became a center for gun manufacturers in eastern New York State. Gun cases were made from various materials including wood, leather, cloth, and mail order materials until 1907 when metal cases began to be produced. From 1907-1911, metal cases were produced at the now defunct Peekskill Arsenal and then again from 1915-1917 at Scranton Arsenal before production ended at both plants due to World War I aggression. Production resumed in 1919 at Hazleton Arsenal but only lasted two years due to World War II aggression. On October 14th of that year, joint US/British munitions manufacturing plant Haviland merged with American munitions manufacturer Bethlehem Steel in an attempt to improve production rates for both companies during wartime shortages. However, this merger did not work out well and Haviland closure followed on December 10th of that year (the same day as Bethlehem Steel). As a result of these closures, steel case production ceased completely in Lackawanna on December 13th 1941 which is still the date that metal cases first ceased production in Lackawanna according to local history books After WWII ended there was no need for anymore steel case production so it slowly tapered off over time with some factories continuing operation until they closed too Today there are few if any factories producing metal cases left in Lackawannon because today’s economy doesn’t support such a process

In 1814, during the War of 1812, General Andrew Jackson's forces attacked Fort Niagara while under siege by British forces led by Major-General George Armstrong Custer. The Americans routed numerous British units with heavy losses but lost many horses and sick men; however this victory did not gain them any military laurels as Custer's force had also been supported by Indian allies which helped him achieve his objective of routing American forces before he could march into Canada for an invasion planned for autumn that year A new fort was built atpresent day downtown Lackawanna in 1835 as part of territorial expansion announced by President James K. Polk following Mexico's war with America over Texas annexation In 1860 during American Civil War Union soldiers burned down several buildings including one called "the blacksmith shop", near present day Main Street while supplies were being stored there for winter Lackawanna lost its post office (and ZIP code) when it merged with Carlisle (now Wyoming) in 1968 In 1984 two bridges over Valley Creek were replaced – one across Valley Creek north of Main Street and one across South Fork creek southeast of present day Court House Square

As part of its celebration of Clinton Potter's life and times - including historical exhibits at various locations throughout town -the Department Of Defense organized a national daylong celebrationJuly 24th thru 26th 2009 across all 50 states honoring our Founding Father with ceremonies similar to those held more than two centuries ago! Lackawanna was originally a town in Ulster County, New York. The town was chartered on February 17, 1814, by the General Assembly of New York under the name of "Easton". It took its present name from the Delaware River. The first store in Lackawanna opened in 1825. In 1830, the town had a population of 413 and became part of Erie County. In 1868, it merged with Wyoming County to form Delaware County. The county seat was at Scranton until 1907 when it moved to Wilkes-Barre. Lackawanna has since reverted to its original name and is now a census-designated place (CDP).
