Lackawanna County, New York was first settled in the early 1700s. The area that is now Lackawanna County was part of Albany Township, and then Unadilla Township. In 1814, the area became part of what is now Erie County. In 1828, Lackawanna County was created from parts of Erie and Ontario Counties. On July 1, 1829, the county seat moved from Albany to Scranton. The first shooting target holders were built in 1847 by Abram Copley in his farmstead on Otter Creek Road near present-day Scranton. Lackawanna is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,787 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lackawanna is located on the southern shore of Niagara Lake and its name comes from a word meaning "to leave behind." In 1655, Sir George Collier purchased land here and established a trading post called Fort Orange. The first settlement in what is now Lackawanna was made by Nicholas Swenzi in 1793. A school was built here in 1824 and named for John Denton, an American Revolutionary War colonel who served as brigadier general during the Battle of Saratoga. In 1837, Lackawania became a town when it was merged with Schenectady Township to form the Erie County townships of Aurora, Buffalo, Clinton-Dunnock-Lackawanna (now Watertown), and West Seneca. The first mills were erected in Lackawanna after some early settlers learned how to do milling from their Native Americans counterparts. By 1860 there were 10 mills operating in Lackawanna – six woolen Mills (the White Mill Complex still stands), three cotton Mills (the First National Cotton Mill complex located on Main Street between State Road 7 and 8A now houses the Eastman Kodak Museum), two papermaking plants (the Ewing & Company Paper Plant on North Second Street west of Depot Square) and one shingle furnace plant which produced black lacquer products until 1914). As more people began moving into Erie County during the 1850s they joined forces with other farming communities to form what would become known as agricultural societies or "aldermen." These societies provided financial assistance to farmers via loans and helped lead neighborhood protests against various injustices such as taxes levied without representation or excessive rents being raised subjecting working class citizens to high levels of poverty while also contributing to social unrest which often led to violent riots which destroyed property or injured innocent bystanders

Lackawanna is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Lackawanna was first established in 1784. It is the namesake of Lackawanna Creek. Lackawanna is located on the border of present-day Buffalo and Niagara Falls counties. The Town of Lackawanna was organized September 10, 1784 from part of the Village of Rome which had been formed December 14, 1781 by an act of the New York State Legislature under the "General Assembly's Act for Regulating Commerce and Merchant Shipping" (Public Law 792). Lackawanna Creek served as a primary means of transportation for early settlers in this area and it still plays an important role today with its many waterfalls and creekside homes. The townsite was laid out on a promontory overlooking Lake Ontario called High Rock Point because it offered excellent views across to Canada from where residents could see both Niagara Falls and Buffalo far below. In 1814, when Erie County was created from parts of what were then Albany and Schenectady Counties, part of that county went to form Niagara County while another part including much of what is now Lackawanna County remained within Albany County until 1840 when that county became Yates County. In 1854, part again went to form Buffalo City School District No. 2 while other parts remain within thepresent day Erie County government limits as well as within Niagara Falls city limits eastward to Onondaga Lake where they are now known as Canandaigua River Township No. 9A or "Canandaigua Lakes Township". It wasn't until after World War II that administration began taking place out beyond town lines thanks to field work done by officials appointed by newly created Townships like Canandaigua Lakes Township No. 9A which bordered New York City proper on one side and Niagara Falls on the other side - thus giving people living there access not only to their own townships but also large chunks of Manhattan Beach (now Brooklyn), Queens Village (now Elmhurst), Corona Heights (now Astoria), Park Slope (now Borough Park) and much more extending all the way into Long Island Sound just south Of Hicksville between Farmingdale Junction outside Syosset village line eastward along South Duffield Boulevard through North Duffield Boulevard past Sayreville before arriving at Farmingdale Junction inside Nassau village line westward along East Shore Boulevard past Oyster Bay beach
The Lackawanna River was first settled by the Lenape in 1624. The river served as a trade route between New York City and points south. In 1714, the area became part of Pennsylvania, and in 1768, it became part of New York state. The Lackawanna Canal was built in 1825 to connect the Erie Canal to the Susquehannock River.
