The town was named after Nicholas Lacksawick (1746-1820), an Englishman who owned some land near present day Hamburg, New York. In 1839 John Davenport organized a Methodist church which remained active until 1921 when it merged with nearby Oneida Wesleyan Church to form Oneida Wesleyan Church–Lackawanna Methodist Episcopal congregation. A blacksmith shop was established in 1840 by Cpls George Harris and James Waring Jr.. During World War II many residents worked as munitions workers on Manhattan's East Side; these men were sometimes called "Lackwannians" because their town had no branch of the military services available to it during that time period other than police officers (). In 1795, General John Forbes attacked and burned down a house near present-day Girardville after erroneously believing it to be occupied by some Indians. In 1825, William Lyon Mackenzie built a sawmill and gristmill on Main Street in what is now Rome. He also built a number of log homes around his mill site; these are still standing today and are used as museum exhibits or rental properties. The community developed rapidly due to its close proximity to mills, markets, and transportation links; by 1835 it had a school and storehouse as well as five churches and one Baptist church (the only one in the town). During World War I, Lackawanna furnished many troops with food supplies from its grocery store which served them until they reached soldiers' camps near Niagara Falls; when those supplies ran out, lackadaisical citizens brought back items they could find locally instead such as milk or eggs without having to leave their homes for hours just to get them back home again. The Lackawanna County seat was first established in 1784, when the town of Lancaster was consolidated with the neighboring towns of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre. The county was created on December 12, 1809 from parts of Huntingdon and Columbia counties. On November 3, 1827, the town of Westville merged into Lackawanna County. On January 1, 1800, the township of Northumberland became a part of the county. In 1836, portions of Schuylkill and Carbon counties were combined to form new Schuylkill County. On July 1, 1851, all but two precincts in Delaware Township were divided off from Lackawanna County to form Adams Township. On October 15th and 16th respectively, the entire population within Delaware Township voted for formation as a separate independent borough called Westville Borough. The vote was 755 for incorporation and 5 against incorporation; however this change did not take effect until February 14th due to an act by then-Governor John Aiken which exempted districts with less than 2 thousand residents from being chartered as boroughs.
