Lackawanna is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern bank of the Susquehanna River and is bordered by Lackawanna Township to the north, Clinton Township to the east, and Slingerland Township to the south. The first Europeans to reach Lackawanna were French traders in 1609 who named it La Cite de la Paix (the Place of Peace). In 1724, a surveyor called Jameson laid out land for a townsite on what is now First Street in front of Lackawannas’s courthouse. The site was chosen because it lay where water power could be developed for mills and because of its location on high ground overlooking both banks of the river. In 1838, when Erie County was created from part of Montgomery County, Lackawanna became one of its five townships. On April 12, 1854, it became an incorporated village when all but two members of its Board of Trustees joined with Reedsville in forming that township. The following year – July 10 – voters approved a mill charter which allowed four local mills: Easton Mills (now part of570 Third Avenue), Beech Brook Mills (now part of Second Avenue), Northumberland Mills (now part of Fifth Avenue) and Westinghouse Mills (now part of Eighth Avenue). On May 1st 1830 residents voted not to annex any other town or villages within Erie County as this would have placed them under pressure from Buffalo City officials for market dominance within their respective jurisdictions. However residents did annex some neighboring townships during this time such as Clinton Township on September 10th 1830 and Slingerland Township on October 15th 1830; however these annexations were short-lived due to successivereek outbreaks starting around 1835 which caused most homes in those townships to become uninhabitable due lack Of food storage space available nearby farmers marketsplaces like Canandaigua and Utica NJ..
