The creek also flows through the center of town. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Lackawanna were Dutch settlers in 1624, who named it "Hannibal" after their captain of marines who explored this area. A group of English Protestants called "New Netherland" established themselves here in 1664 and renamed the area "Lackawanna." In 1765, a large tract of land north of present-day Lackawanna was bought by Nicholas d'Almeida from the Lenape chief Tsechunkanishek (Cecil) for £2,000. Some early colonists built log homes near d'Almeida's home on what is now North Main Street. In 1787, David Harvey sold about 640 acres (240 ha) east of present-day downtown Lackawanna to John Eckford for £1,500. Eckford had come overland from Connecticut as part of an effort to learn more about this area before making his decision whether or not to purchase more land in Ulster County. He developed a small farm there until his death in 1814; his wife did most of the work on the farm while he attended college in Durham, England. In 1825, when Albany and Schenectady Counties were created from portions of Ulster County, Lackawanna became one of five towns within Albany Township (later Capital District), which included Schenectady and Troy. In 1834–35%, it lost territory to Auburn Township due south as part of that township's merger with Saratoga County.. A post office operated at Lackawanna from 1833 until 1865; letters patent were issued February 2nd that year allowing for a name change to "Dalhousie". In 1861–62 James Fenton organized a tannery at Park Row along Park Avenue; this gave rise to the name "Fenton's Factory". The town got its first schoolhouse in 1868 and only opened up during high school years when other schools were closed because they didn't have enough money for tuition costs..
