Lackawanna is a small town in New York State, located in Niagara County. The population was 7,496 at the 2000 census. Lackawanna is the county seat of Niagara County. Lackawanna has been inhabited by the Lenape people since the early 17th century. In 1677, Sir Edmund Andros and his forces invaded and burned down the village of West Nyack after finding it unoccupied during his war against the Iroquois Confederacy. The village rebuilt and prospered until around 1815 when white settlers began to arrive in large numbers, pushing the Lenape out of their traditional territory. In 1824, General John Wayne's army destroyed an Indian village near present-day Buffalo Grove as part of its campaign to clear land for agricultural purposes. A year later, New York stateanked farming areas east of Buffalo Grove for white settlement; this included what is now Lackawanna Township. The first post office at Lackawanna was established on February 14, 1826. The name "Lackawanna" was chosen because there were no others nearby with similarsounding names (eastern NY had a number of such towns). The first settler in what is now Lackawanna Township was George Fenton on November 5, 1830; he built a cabin on a piece of property that still stands today outside modern day downtown (Fenton also founded North Tonawanda). By 1840 there were only six resident families in what is now Lackawannacounty; these included three men from Canada who had come overland through Albany to find land west of Niagara Falls: Nicholas Biddle (1840–1912), John Quinn (1842–1920) and Arthur Lawson (1845–1900). During World War II many residents drafted or served in military units including those who lived near Rochester where they could work at local munitions plants or join up with other National Guard Units along with their brothers and sisters living overseas; some locals even helped build airfields remote from populated areas so troops could be landed more conveniently closer to homes should hostilities break out again should deterrence fail Many residents left following peace negotiations which led to Germany's surrender unconditionally which ended World War II . Some returned after 1945 but most decided not to live back home again – choosing instead to settle elsewhere within new stateshood formed as a result of World War II settlements . Lackawanna County was formed on October 12, 1825 from portions of Erie and Niagara counties. The county seat at Scranton was moved to Lackawanna in 1829. The town of Lancaster became the county seat in 1873. On April 14, 1874, Lackawanna County was renamed Pennsylvania County. On July 1, 1907, Lackawanna County again changed its name to New York County. The original courthouse building still stands and is used as a museum today.
Lackawanna was a major Erie Canal town in western New York State. The town was founded by the Dutch in 1690 and named for the Lackawanna River, which forms its eastern border. In 1825, it became part of Erie County, and until 1881 it also formed part of the Towns of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre. On October 15, 1881, Lackawanna merged with the towns of Wilkes-Barre and Scranton to form the city of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
