Lackawanna, New York is a small town in Lackawanna County, New York, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern frontier of Erie County and on the north side of Niagara Falls State Park. The town of Lackawanna was established by Dutch colonists in 1665 as a trading post on the Niagara River. In 1802, it became part of Ontario County and in 1814 became part of Erie County. The first settlers were farmers who arrived from Holland in 1795. By 1800, there were 10 families living in the community; by 1830 there were 30 families living there. In 1836, the community acquired its current name when it was moved from Holland to what is now Lackawanna County after its founder's father decided to anglicize his last name (Klein) into "Lackawanna". At that time, only men could own land in America and so women did not have access to property until after they married or had children. In 1840–41, due to an outbreak of cholera which struck western New York hard during this era, many villagers abandoned their homes and moved back into Holland where they continued farming along with building new homes. The first gristmill was built in 1842; by 1850 there were five businesses operating in Lackawanna: a store, two hotels/motels (one with 12 rooms), four schools (grades one through twelve), and one Baptist church serving all six villages within limits; also residentially several hundred people lived inside city limits including about fifty-five farmers who raised horses for local transportation and other purposes as well as twenty-four mechanics engaged chiefly in shoeing horses or sawing lumber etc.; these residents formed what is known today as "the Five Townsmen" group although no formal organization existed until 1851 when three individuals - James Paine Sr., Timothy Dolan and Samuel Morse - organized themselves into a company called " Pioneers' Land Company" which purchased 625 acrescontaining all but 800 feet of high water’s edge at present day Niagara Falls State Park adjacent to Village No 5). This group played an instrumental role subsequent years when various political changes led to increased settlement inside state boundaries especially around Buffalo area thereby exposing eastern endowment lands east of falls for development while original proctors retained ownership title & claim over those located west & south Limit line... For more than 50 years efforts expended & continuous vigilance exercised by pioneer descendants thru organizations such as Sons Of pioneers Land Company paid off handsomely resultingin development beyond imagination even thought possible prior thereto! In 1863 Union General Ulysses S Grant occupied Kingston Heights near Buffalo while fighting against Rebel forces under Robert E Lee; due to Grant's presence Union citizens began raiding surrounding farms & towns seeking supplies leading some residents towards British War effort providing support services without actually being members of militia or participating actively therein since most males did not serve outside home country whereas women mostly managed household affairs (& some served male military); few firearms were confiscated although quite a number pistols probably seized since many civilians unwisely took advantage gun showsgun shows featuring rifles extensively promoted by then Sheriff George Hylanwhom we remember today as “The Gunman”

McKee'svoyage marked an important milestone for American shipping as she became one of only a few vessels ever to make such a trip without convoy escort; today this typeof journey is usually accomplished through air cargo or container ships escorted by warships
