In 1966, Union Carbide Corporation established its presence here with the construction of their Carbide Sanity plant using local land that had been donated by Armstrong's family. The town has seen many changes over the years, including several fires that destroyed much of its infrastructure during the1980s and 1990s. However, recent development has brought new life to the town, with a variety of businesses opening up around the McCain Avenue location which used to be home to Union Carbide Corporation's Carbide Sanity plant until it closed down in 2006.

The valley is also famous for its mills, which produced flour, paper, cotton, and other goods. In the 19th century, the area became an important center for trade and commerce in New York City.
