Lackawanna County is located in the northeastern corner of New Yorkstate and forms the eastern border of Pennsylvania. The county seat, Scranton, is located in Lackawanna County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 194,821. Its area is 10,574 square miles (27,711 square kilometers). The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Lackawanna County were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1624 and named it "Wadhamsboro". In 1765, British colonists established a military post at West Point on Long Island which they renamed Fort Pitt. The town of Lancaster was founded near present-day Scranton by Scottish immigrants in 1772. By 1800, there were over 100 households and 50 families living in Lancaster alone. In 1825, John Fenton purchased land east of where Lancaster now stands from George Washington for $10 per acre (1/4 mile²). He began to clear land for his farm called “Fenton’s Purchase” which would eventually become Lackawanna County. In 1829 he donated five acres (2 km²) to the State of New York for a courthouse and jail. The first public school opened in Lancaster on December 12th, 1832 as part of a larger educational system that included private schools across central New York state at this time. For many years it was considered one of the best schools in America because its graduates went on to achieve great things such as serving as judges or members of Congress.
