In 1802, John Dorman settled near present-day Parsonsville and began to trade with the Indians. By 1810, all of modern-day Lackawannan had been platted and it became part of Erie County. In 1814, Abraham Bicknell established a trading post on the river at what is now Parsonsville. The post served as an important center for Native American trade until white settlers moved into the area in the 1830s and began to produce crops such as maize and wheat. At this time, many of these early pioneers were Irish Catholics who had come to America seeking religious freedom under free migration laws that were passed during President James Krieger's administration in response to growing anti-Catholic sentiment across much of Europe following priestly sexual abuse scandals there by Catholic clergymen known as "the machinations of Rome." In 1828–29 Samuel Morse built one of the first westward transmission lines through New England using horse power from his farmstead near Bethlehem north upriver to Utica Junction on Long Island Sound; this line later became known as The Hartford Road (now Route 9). Morse’s farmstead still stands today about two miles south of present-day Joy Kilmer Avenue (Route 9A) just east of Utica Junction where he started his line.
