Lackawanna is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Erie County. Lackawanna was founded in 1795 by John and Susannah Lackawanna and named for their farm in the town of Lackawanna on the Wyoming Valley near what is now Scranton. The first post office called Lackawanna was established in 1796, and remained in operation until 1876. The first settlers were John and Susannah Lackawannas who arrived from Philadelphia on July 12, 1795 with their family. They built a log cabin on what is now Johnson Street. By 1800 there were twenty-four families living here including seven Baptists and six Congregationalists. In 1802 a bridge over the Unitarian Creek was completed connecting the towns of Canandaigua (now Niagara Falls) to Buffalo via Landing Place on Delaware Bayou (now Lake Ontario). The lack of water transportation made this an important stop for goods during these years; cattle were driven across the bay to Buffalo then walked or rode to work The first schoolmaster in Lackawanna was Elijah Hossler who started teaching grades one through eight in 1827. He also ran a sawmill which became known as "theOld Mill". A grist mill followed shortly thereafter but it closed due to competition from other mills not far away In 1829 James Armstrong moved his foundry from Canandaigua to where he developed into Armstrong's Iron Works located along Main Street today's Armstrong Drive By 1830 there were ninety-six families living here with five Baptist churches, eleven Congregationalist churches and three Roman Catholic parishes all active until 1850 when they all merged into one new congregation called First Presbyterian Church which still meets today During this time some important events took place such as: On March 25th 1830 Isaac Bellamy opened up his wagon shop at 5 Front Street occupied by Wm Fenton which became Albany Distributing Company later renamed Empire Furniture Co.; November 11th 1830 Samuel Morse opened up his telegraph business at 722 Main Street; December 3rd 1830 Timothy Leary set up his laboratory at 6 Nassau Avenue On February 14th 1831 William Blythe married Catharine Coffin at First Presbyterian Church building where she had been baptized two days earlier In 1836 Thomas Mifflin donated land for a road between Canandaiguna and Rochester so that farmers could get their produce to market faster

The first settlers to what is now Lackawanna were French traders and missionaries who arrived there in 1724. The town was named for John Lackawanna (1681-1751), an astronomer, mathematician and Polynesian voyager who explored much of North America during the eighteenth century. In 1812, after the Canadas were Annexed by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase, a group of Americans from Ulster County settled in what became Lackawanna. They named their community for General James Ketchum (1768-1848), commander of Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican-American War. In 1836, when Buffalo was incorporated as a city, many residents left to join that city or move to other towns within Erie County because Buffalo's growth would have required more land than could be acquired through taxation alone. Some remained in lackawana until after it became a borough in 1898; others moved into new towns near buffalo or outside Erie County altogether during that time period The peak population of 5,500 occurred around 1880 due largely to waves of Irish immigrants coming northward seeking work on large farms and in manufacturing centers such as Buffalo and Syracuse . However with accompanying economic decline throughout most of the country following World War I ,the population slowly decreased over ensuing decades until reaching 4,000 by 1990 . Today little more than 1%of its original inhabitants remain living within its borders In 1935 local citizens banded together to form their own government under a Presidential Executive Order issued by Franklin D Roosevelt ; this order gave rise to today's municipal government system . In 1970 another executive order granted voting rights to all citizens regardless of race or ethnicity which helped spur development along minority cultural corridors Today few if any residents maintain contact with their ancestors who founded these communities over two centuries ago

In 1764, the Province of New York was created from parts of the Dutch and British colonies, and Lackawanna became a part of it. In 1825, the town of Scranton incorporated as a separate municipality. On July 12, 1886, Lackawannan Township was merged into Scranton Borough.
