Lackawanna is a small town in upstate New York, United States. The population was 7,819 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five towns in the Niagara County seat of Buffalo. Lackawanna was once part of Erie County and it was organized as a village on April 15, 1825. On October 14, 1828, Lackawanna became an incorporated town when all other villages in Erie County were merged into it. The first post office in Lackawanna was established on May 11, 1827; it closed on November 12, 1860. In 1835-36 an addition to the original brick building (located just east of Main Street) housed a Mechanics' Institute which taught mechanics and metallurgy to local farmers and their children before it closed in 1865 due to financial difficulties. In 1840-41 there were four blacksmiths working for John Purdy who set up shop near what is now Main Street and Clinton Avenue; they continued operations until 1862 when he moved his business downriver to more commodious quarters on Ravenswood Road where he still operates today. In 1845-46 two churches were built: one by David Ramsay and one by Asa Packer Sr.; both are now gone but remain listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1850-51 there was also construction of a Masonic Temple located across from what is now Central High School; that structure burned down in 1951 but remains standing as a reminder of early community activity in Lackawani

Lackawanna grew rapidly during America's Romantic era (1830-1860), thanks to immigrants who arrived seeking new opportunities and fresh starts. In 1860, over 50% of its residents were foreign born; this percentage increased to more than 80% by 1970. By 1990, all but one family residing there had originated from outside North America. In 1785, Lackawanna County was formed from portions of Monmouth and Morris counties. The county seat was Shamokin. In 1828, the eastern border of the new county was changed to include part of Westchester County. In 1837, Lackawanna County became a part of New York State; it lost its independent status in 1907.
