Lackawanna is a small town in upstate New York, located on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The population was 2,719 at the 2010 census. Lackawanna is one of three towns in Erie County and one of four towns in Niagara County. In addition to its core businesses and services, Lackawanna also includes a number of rural farms and residences that provide basic needs for its residents. The area now known as Lackawanna was first settled by German immigrants in the 17th century. The name "Lackawanna" is derived from a Delaware word meaning "the place where there are no fish." By 1800, English settlers were living in the area as well and began to erect mills on the riverbank. In 1825, Indiana Territory was created and included much of what is now eastern Erie County; within Indiana Territory, this included parts of what are now Lackawannakee Township and part of what is now western Niagara County. On July 1, 1827, when Congress passed an act creating Niagara County (northwest corner of Erie and Ontario Counties), portions of present-day Buffalo Township (southeast corner of Erie and Ontario Counties) were added to Niagara County along with lands eastward from the falls including most of present-day Albany Township (in west Monroe County). During this time period other settlements developed around these mills – Cedar Point became an important trading post on the Susquehanna; Mechanicville became home to manufacturers who produced goods for local markets; Parkersburg grew up around military encampments constructed near Fort Pitt during the American Revolutionary War; while Lockport grew up around salt works on both sides of the river. In 1830–31, John Smeaton built a dam across the river at Lockport which provided irrigation water for his millinery business and allowed him to expand his operations into western Niagara County beyond his original boundaries. This development led to increased trade between Buffalo Township/Niagara Falls area and southwestern Ontario/Buffalo Township – which bordered Wyoming Valley eastward from Lockport – as people looking for goods they could not find closer started traveling downriver rather than driving or flying back home due to high prices at major markets such as Philadelphia or Boston. This growth eventually led to more than 150 factories being erected along both sides of the Susquehannon throughout this decade making it one of America's largest manufacturing regions at that point, although many smaller firms continued to operate until after World War II when production shifted towards larger plants overseas. In 1840–41 Nicholas Hildebrandt moved his tannery outfitted with a grinderstone works overground from Cedar Point onto land he had leased from Chief Justice John Marshall Harlan who then granted him citizenship so he could vote in state elections – marking yet another milestone in early 20th century settlement growth hereabouts!
