In 1803 John Duryea built a mill on the south side of the river which became known as Duryea's Mill until taken over by James Fenton in 1829. A school was established here in 1814 by Reverend Simeon Teague with aid from Alexander McDowell and others who had contributed money for it. By 1830 there were five residents attending classes; however only one inhabitant graduated from high school within two years due to lack of enrollment. In 1838 Samuel Cushing purchased land east ofpresent day Goodyear Park Mall which he named Cushing Heights after himself and his father-in-law Augustus Haughton (1st Viscount Haughton) who had donated $5,000 towards its construction with an eye towards providing social services to those living around it. With this purchase came increased enrollment at both schools as well as new businesses such as a tannery and gristmill along with farmland stretching all the way to Indian Lake where corniced cottages still stand today used by local farmers for their own livestock grazing needs during summer months when there are no issues with snow cover or frozen ground conditions outside these limited areas! In 1837 and 1840, it became part of Buffalo Township; until 1850 it was in western Niagara County. In 1850 it became a part of the Town of Niagara Falls and remains so to this day. The town has suffered from natural disasters including Hurricane Alfred in 1917 which destroyed much of its infrastructure, followed by more recent floods that have severely impacted its economy and public services such as water supply and sewer systems.
