The history of firearms in Lackawanna, New York dates back to the early 1800s. The first guns were used by Native Americans for hunting and protection. In 1825, Captain John Stevens, a British officer stationed in the town, brought over a number of rifles and pistols from England. He also purchased some clothing to be worn while on his duty. In 1836, Captain Anthony Bemis built a gun factory in Lackawanna. This factory produced rifles and pistols for use by the local militia and farmers. The Gunsmoke Rifle Company was formed in 1837 and became one of the largest rifle companies in America. In 1862, Captain George Armstrong founded the Armstrong Arms Company in Lackawanna with designs of an automatic pistol that he called the “Pistolero”. This company produced pistols until 1865 when it merged with another company to form Colt Corp., which still makes handguns today! In 1915,Captain John Fenton started manufacturing ammunition at his shop on Main Street in Lackawanna. His products include shot shells, grenades, artillery rounds, .303 caliber rounds and more! Ammunition production continued until 1975 when it was sold to Winchester Ammunition Corporation!

The Lackawanna Rifle and Pistol Club was organized in 1876. The club continued to be active until 1912. In 1892, the Lackawanna Rifle and Pistol Club established a rifle range on the grounds of local agricultural farmhouse. The rifle range remained in use until 1922. In 1915, the Lackawanna Rifle and Pistol Club began to sell firearms from their clubhouse. This led to the establishment of a gun store in 1916 which became successful until it closed in 1925. In 1924, the Lackawanni Rifle and Pistol Club hired Nelsons Bros., manufacturers of shotguns, as its dealers. This led to the development of a shotgun industry in Lackawanna. From 1927-1929, the Lackawanna Rifle & Pistol Club established an exhibition hall on their premises where they exhibited firearms from all over New York State. This hall also served as a training ground for future rifle shooters.
Lackawanna County is one of the seven counties in New York. It was created on November 3, 1784, from portions of Erie and Wayne counties. Lackawanna is bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, Ontario to the east, Westchester County to the south, and Buffalo County to the west. The population of Lackawanna was estimated at 246,725 as of 2010. The county seat is Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (population: 103,817). Other major towns in Lackawanna are Wilkes-Barre/Scranton; Hazleton; Easton; Unicoi; and Monmouth Junction. Lackawanna has a humid continental climate with hot summers and mild winters. Precipitation averages around 1,200 mm annually while temperatures average around 25–30 °C during summer months and 18–25 °C during winter months. The highest temperature ever recorded was 38·5 °C on July 21st 1991 while the lowest temperature ever recorded was −18·6 °C on December 6th 1984. There have been three severe hurricanes that have struck this area within 10 years each: Hurricane Agnes (1996), Hurricane Floyd (1998), and Hurricane Irene (2011). In terms of economic activity, manufacturing dominates with 27% of total employment in agriculture while 22% comes from services such as transportation and health care services

Lackawanna was first settled in the early 17th century by the Lenape people. In 1686, the Dutch founded a trading post on the east bank of the Susquehanna River near present-day Lackawanna City. By 1800, however, Lachwanca had declined as a commercial center due to its location along busy rivers and its lack of infrastructure. In 1825, John Sutter built his largest ranch in what is now northwestern Wyoming Territory. This led to increased interest in the region and helped spur development throughout Lackawanna County. Over time, industries have developed including papermaking, meatpacking, agriculture, lumbering and manufacturing. Today, Lackawanna is one of the most economically vibrant areas in New York State – home to over 200 businesses and an estimated population of over 150,000 residents. With strong community spirit and an unyielding work ethic, locals are poised for continued success in this rapidly changing economy.
Lackawanna was a farming community in New York State. It was located on the southern end of the Finger Lakes region, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Buffalo and 30 miles (48 km) south of Syracuse. The first European to visit Lackawanna was Giovanni Margaritano in 1624. The area had been inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Mohawk people since at least 1600 AD. In 1795, Nicholas Demarest founded a trading post near what is now Niagara Falls, New York, and began importing goods from Canada. A census of 1821 showed that there were only 3 families living in Lackawanna Township; 21 residents lived in neighboring townships. By 1840, most residents had left for better opportunities elsewhere in the state or for United States territory east of the Appalachian Mountains. In 1846, a smallpox epidemic struck the community and killed many people; some believe this caused many residents to leave for good. Lackawannan township was organized as a separate municipality on February 1, 1850, by act of the New York State Legislature under then-Governor DeWitt Clinton. The town became an important railroad center due to its location at one end of a line extending from Buffalo to Syracuse via Rochester and Albany—a line which opened up new opportunities for business development around these cities. Lackawanna lost its importance after heavy traffic along this line shifted away from these two cities in the early 20th century; however, it remains an important commercial center today with several high-rise buildings located within its limits
