In 1853-1854 Averell Harriman conducted a survey for President Franklin D. Roosevelt which resulted in the formation of the Mohawk Valley Railroad (MVRR) through present-day Lackawanda village and into Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on behalf of Pennsylvania Railroad negotiators Rockefeller and Harriman working together with George Stephenson's Liverpool Railway consortium to build a Transcontinental Railway across America via Buffalo - connecting Illinois with Atlantic City - creating what we now call "the American West". The townsfolk had gathered around their private fireplaces enjoying hot coffee or cigars when news arrived that steamboats were arriving at Southamptonport on Lake Ontario carrying goods destined for Albany, New York but not yet reaching Niagara Falls! They eagerly awaited their chance to board one or more vessels and experience their namesake waterfall firsthand before they returned home...or so they thought! Alas not everyone could board those steamboats due to crowded conditions; some made it back onboard but many didn't make it out alive! A group of local men decided then and there that they would put an end to this inconveniently timed shipment problem once and for all by organizing themselves into a small group known as "The Larks" - inspired perhaps by Robin Hoods yarn about robbers stealingfrom rich merchants - determined not only to intercept any shipments coming downriver but also stop them entirely if possible until proper accommodations could be made aboard ships waiting offshore...and eventually they did just that becoming recognized throughout America as authorities on all matters pertaining to water traffic along both banks...a position they maintain even today! This hard work paid off: within weeks thereafter large quantities OF GOODS had been shipped successfully past Lark's checkpoint without incident yet little notice had been given locally... typical arrogance on our part I guess! One can imagine what must have gone through those captains' minds when reports started trickling back about how well things were going ashore while inland shipping languished unassisted; must have been quite frustrating being constantly harried by aboveground politicians while your boats breeze right past you unobserved! But unlike today where railroads provide automobiles or other conveniences unavailable prioritizing speed over quality these days everything goes according to plan right up until somebody accidentally cuts power (or worse). For lack thereof I might add 😦
