The Lackawanna Rifle Company was founded in 1829 by Captain Levi Coffin and his brother, Major John Coffin. The company was originally located in the town of Lackawanna on the Susquehanna River. In 1836,Captain Levi Coffin and Major John Coffin sold their interest in the company to Colonel Jonathan Nevin. The new owners replaced the older style iron barrels with brass ones, increased accuracy with breechloading rifles, and improved manufacturing processes. In 1840-1841,the Lackawannas manufactured rifles for General George McClellan's army during the American Civil War. In 1875-1876,the Lackawannas produced rifles for US President Ulysses S. Grant's forces during the Indian Wars in California. After World War I ended, the company resumed production of rifles but ceased production altogether in 1922 due to changes in technology that made brass-framed firearms more difficult to produce sustainably. After Prohibition began in 1933, many of the company's guns were confiscated by state law enforcement agencies as part of efforts to enforce Prohibitionism. Many of these guns were later melted down and reused as parts for other firearms companies.. In 2006-2007, a group of enthusiasts purchased most or all of the remaining cannons from Captain Levi Coffin's widow and restored them back into working order including installing a new barrel/stock combination and trigger housing kit from H&R Arms Inc., using surplus 7mm Remington rounds that they had acquired from an arsenal store owner who had been selling weapons formerly belonging to Captain Levi Coffin's Widow’s Gun Club which later became known as "The Gun Club". This restoration project is still ongoing as of September 2007
Lackawanna is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,032 at the 2010 census. Lackawanna is the smallest of the five towns in Erie County and is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Lackawanna were some of the original French Canadians who arrived in 1754 on their way to Quebec City. They named their community after Captain John Lackland, an Englishman who had been sent to explore the area by Governor John Tryon. In 1812, when Niagara Falls became a national park and Erie County was created, Lackawanna was one of several villages annexed into the new county. In 1825, it became a town charter and has remained that way ever since. As one of only two survive rural townships in Erie County (the other being Sayre), Lackawanna has seen its share of cultural changes over time - from small-scale farming to more industrial development during the period following World War II. Today's economy is based largely on manufacturing: agriculture remains a significant staple food source for many residents; however, there are now also sizeable concentrations of technology companies as well as professional services firms such as law enforcement and health care providers. In recent years, local efforts have included support for arts and heritage programming; increasing access to public transportation; and developments such as new parks and trails that offer opportunities for outdoor recreational activities.

Lackawanna was a small town in upstate New York that is now part of Scranton, Pennsylvania. The community was founded on the Wyoming River in 1812 by settlers who were attracted to its fertile land and easy access to transportation. Lackawanna's early economy was based on agriculture, but it soon became known for its local brewery, which produced beer and other products until the 1970s. In addition to its brewing industry, Lackawanna also had a large lumberyard, several banks and two churches. The town suffered from numerous natural disasters during the late 19th century including a flood in 1892 that destroyed much of the town center and a fire in 1915 that destroyed most of the buildings within walking distance of the civic center. Despite these setbacks, lackawanna continued to grow through the 20th century and into the 21st century. In 2001, it became one of 10 towns in Pennsylvania that joined forces with neighboring Scranton to form the Susquehanna Valley Authority. As part of this effort, Lackawanna began developing new economic opportunities including an entertainment district called Wanganui Park which includes several restaurants and nightlife venues as well as a convention center and stadium. In recent years, efforts have been made to revitalize downtown areas such as Wanganui Park as well as revive some of the town's older businessesubsidizing them with tax breaks or grants. Overall, Lackawango has seen significant growth over recent decades and is continuing to make significant contributions to Pennsylvania's economy both locallyand nationally
Lackawanna County was formed from parts of Erie and Niagara Counties in 1837. The county is named for the Lackawanna River, which bounds it on its southern side.
