Lackawanna is a town in Lackawanna County, New York, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lackawanna was first settled in 1776 by the Lenape Native Americans. Lackawanna was first planned as a town and was laid out in 1792 by Elias Boudinot and others associated with the town of Easton in Erie County. However, because of its location on what was then known as Indian land and because of concerns about possible attacks from the Iroquois Confederacy, the Town Board decided to rename it "Lackawanna" after General John Forbes's victory over them at Saratoga Bridge on October 26, 1794. The original lots were sold in 1824 and 1830 to Colonel John Palfrey who donated them to the town for use as general storehouse Lots 4 & 5 (later renamed Main Street). In 1837 they were partitioned into two lots - lot 1 (now north side of First Street) went to Ebenezer Fenton who donated it to The Congregationalist Church which built a school there in 1840; lot 2 went to James Gorman who donated it to Methodist Episcopal Zion Church which built an addition there in 1846 In 1857 Lot 6 became part of lot 3 when Presbyterian Reverend Wm. Heninger bought it from Ebenezer Fenton for $2,500 In 1916 another parcel became part of lot 3 when Drury Noyes bought it from Rev. Wm Heninger for $2,000 In 1928 Mrs Anna Kapp acquired lot 7 from Drury Noyes for $3200 which she turned into home ownership housing developments called "Dupont Circle" . These are still extant today but have been greatlyChanged since their heyday during World War II when many students lived there including Army generals and admirals post war In 1951 The Jehovah's Witnesses purchased all 8 lots which had formerly been part of Dupont Circle for under $4200 making this one block section

It is home to the Lackawanna Canal and Railroad Museum and is also known for its cheese production. The area now comprising Lackawanna was first settled by Dutch farmers in 1624 following their arrival from Holland. In 1814, landowner George Stephenson donated some of his estate to establish a village on the current site of Lackawanna as part of an effort to develop what was then a sparsely inhabited area. The village grew rapidly and by 1827 had over 1,000 residents. In 1850, when Erie County was formed, much of what now makes up Erie County was included within it; including Lackawannakee Township west of Buffalo and east of Scranton (now Wilkes-Barre). In 1854, after months of negotiations between George Stephenson's heirs and local leaders, settlers were able to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) along the Mohawk River from the state for $4 per acre ($/km²). This land became known as "the Stephenson Purchase." The business end of this transaction — purchasing and developing — would be handled by James Nicholson*, later director general of Canada Post* during Queen Victoria's reign; while Blanding Brothers*, who had arrived in America in 1784 with John Stevens* as part of an expedition sponsored by General Anthony Wayne* finally got their hands on all but 8% ($164/acre)of that parcel before Nicholson's death in 1865*. By 1870 there were 3 settlements: Great Falls (later Great Falls Village), Orwell (later Orwell Village), and Northampton (later Northampton Township). On October 22nd 1860th under cover OF5 terrorist threats issued against various eastern railroad lines due to sectional conflict over recognition by Abraham Lincoln†(*President Lincoln signer), many locals took up arms against Union troops occupying their homes *Note: lackwitpost has edited out this ominous information about war with Union troops being waged throughout NY prior to 1860‡† So very little can be found about this event other than what has been gleaned from wikipedia or other sources which are not always accurate
