With help from Stephenson, Britain became self-reliant for transportation during World War I; however, locomotives were not powerful enough to carry large amounts of ammunition over long distances (>100 miles). Airguns emerged as an important tool in war effort during World War II because they were much more portable than cannons or artillery; however, their use was limited due to their low firepower compared to rifles and handguns
