Kiryas Joel's unique culture has been its mainstay for centuries; however, recent waves of immigrants have brought new life into the village through their own cultures which have mixed relatively peacefully with those who live there today. In 1814, Colonel Cornelius Van Cortlandt purchased land adjacent to Eliot's Valley from the Indians for $1,000 cash - making it one of the earliest purchases in what would become Albany County. The land included present-day Kiryas Joel and portions of Stillwater Springs which lies east and north Of present-day Rochester; today those hills are part of about 27 square miles (68 km²) section called East Greenbush Township which is located northwest Of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute campus along Ithaca Road between Elmira Road & Cornell University Campus Westerly Extension In 1827, Killian Donnelly established a mill on current day Main Street near where Snyders Creek flows into Mohawk Lake
