Kiryas Joel (born May 9, 1944) is an American Rabbi and the founder and rabbi of Yeshiva University in New York City. He is also a visiting professor at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where he is the dean of the rabbinical school. Joel was born in 1944 to a Reform Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from high school, he attended Yeshiva University, where he obtained a degree in rabbinic law. He then returned to Brooklyn to become a rabbi and teach at Yeshiva Torah Vodaah School before founding Yeshiva University in 1991 as an independent institution teaching Rabbinic Studies and Talmud. In addition to his work at Yeshiva University, Joel has been involved with many other organizations including United Synagogue of America (USA), The Israel Democracy Center (IDC), The Conference on Jewish Renewal (CCJR), the Federation for Civil Rights in Judaism (FCRJ), and Chabad-Lubavitch USA. In 2013 he founded Kiryas Joel Fellowship for Congregational Life which providesscholarship opportunities for congregations throughout North America to deepen their understanding of Torah education through full time immersion in Kiryas Joel's unique brand of Conservative Judaism
