Kingston, New York is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 9,822 at the 2010 census. Its name came from the French word "Kanatha" meaning "coast." The town was named after General John Forbes (1758-1814), who fought in the American Revolution and then became a U.S. Senator from New York. Kingston is located on Lake Ontario and is northeast of Buffalo. It is bordered by the towns of Canandaigua to the north, Rome to the east, West Seneca to the south, and Cayuga Heights to the west. Kingston's eastern border comes about two miles inland from where Highway 355 meets Interstate 95; this boundary forms part of an Indian reservation that stretched back as far as 1827 when Fort Oswego was built on what is now Crown Point Blvd., just east of present-day downtown Kingston (This road continues as Mohawk Blvd.). The western border with Canandaigua comes just past present-day Orchard Park Road; this line forms part of an ancient scalp trade route that ran along or near today's routing of I-95 between Buffalo and Syracuse/Niagara Falls - one reason why there are so few residences hereabouts today! As reported by Nathan Bedford Forrest Jr., “Black Tom” McAllister—alias John Brown—and his band numbering seventy took up arms against whites in early 1868 while living in Canandaigua under assumed names: Lewis Terry alias Nelson Rockefeller; James Mclntyre alias Cornelius Vanderbilt; Elijah Woods alias Zebulon Pike; Andrew Stevenson alias John D’Angelo - these three men were eventually arrested and tried for treasonous conspiracy against white rule during late 1865/early 66...In response to public outcry over these events many African Americans decided to migrate en masse out Eastward during this time period into areas such as Brooklyn Heights including Kingston...these people were known variously as Coast Guardsmen Volunteers or Marines serving with distinction in both Union Army and Confederate Armies during the American Civil War...They brought with them their skills in farming livestock raising crops etcetera which they would use when seeking employment throughout much of Yankeeeland...this migration helped contribute greatly towards making Kingston one of America’s most successful small towns during its post-war years

Today, Kingston is a vibrant community with a strong cultural heritage that has been built on tradition, hard work and innovation.
