In 1780, Nicholas' brother John removed from Newtown Patent with his family to take up land at Kingston Gorge where he built a house called "Queen's Bench". In 1814 Catherine Tompkins helped found the Townshend Female Seminary which still exists today and teaches women that "true education consists not only of acquiring knowledge but also of developing moral character." After serving as trustee for twenty-one years (1836 – 1860), she resigned effective December 1st due to personal health problems and died on January 11th 1861 after giving birth to her second daughter Elizabethtown College Class of 1865 graduate Anna Maria Tompkins Howe.
