Kingston is a small town in the Chenango Valley of New York State. The population was 7,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kingsbury–Onondaga County, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kingston is one of two towns in Onondaga County that are both named after Jameson Livingston, 4th Earl of Scotland (1712-1778). The first settlement in what is now Kingston was made on August 24, 1736 by John Richardson and his family from Albany. The original name for this town was "Albany". In 1738, the town was renamed after Jameson Livingston, 4th Earl of Scotia who had bought land in present-day Kingston from Lord Bute. In 1813, King George IV granted recognition to Kingston as a village and it became an incorporated town on February 14, 1825 with a population of 1,475. From 1830 to 1835 it was part of the Seneca Nation’s Tuscarora Township; but when that tribe ceased operations in1837 it reverted to its own government and got back its old name – Kingston. On July 16th 1861, during the American Civil War between Union forces and Confederate troops stationed along the Chenango River valley near where present-day Kingston lies (the Battle of Halfmoon Pass), Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all civilian males within range be rounded up and taken into custody without any form of trial or process other than capture or execution if they could not provide information leading to their conviction for treason or disloyalty against the United States; these were known as “Garrison Captives” because their captors were soldiers garrisoned nearby at Fort Monroe rather than civilians being treated more humanely. Some 581 people were captured including 281 men from Kingston: 339 men from local farms/houses and 11 women and children who householders with their families were also included among those taken captive; these individuals later went through various legal challenges before being allowed parole after 1865 when most (>80%) served out their natural lives probationary period which ended on September 22nd 1870 at age 50 years old OR 50% had been recaptured alive by that date…. Most (~75%) received amnesty following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which took effect onJanuary 1st 1865….. Aftermath: Many survivors chose not to return home as many felt they would have faced retribution from military authorities should they have attempted to rejoin their unit or hometown since there remained no guarantee any pardons would be given…. Overwhelming majority (>95%) returned home following end of service term…Aftermath: 871 families lived in Unincorporated portions then called “Kingsport” until May 1898 when villages located therein became part of Onondaga County…. Today over 800 descendants live in Unincorporated parts currently comprising parts south/southwest Of Ionia Lake covering much more countryside than existed prior To 1860 When Garrison Captives arrived

The area became part of Albany County when it was created from parts of Orange and Westchester counties in 1814. In 1825, Kingston became a village and was incorporated as a city on July 1, 1865. Kingston enjoyed prosperous times during its early years as an agricultural center due to its fertile land and good transportation links. However, economic decline began to affect Kingston after World War II when industry shifted away from manufacturing and towards services. Although some efforts have been made to revitalize the city over the past few decades, much remains to be done to make Kingston one of the most vibrant contemporary communities in central New York State
