Kingston, New York is a town in Kings County, New York, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kingston was founded by the Dutch in 1624 and became an American settlement in 1795. The town was renamed Kingston after Henry Clinton, 2nd President of the United States (1793-1800). In 1814, it became part of Ontario County and in 1825 it became part of Erie County. The first settler in Kingston was Peter Minuit, who arrived there on October 14th 1624 with his family from Rotterdam Haven on Long Island Sound. On November 6th 1625 he purchased land from the Natives for £100 sterling. In 1627 he built a small fortification called Fort Nassau on high ground east of his original holdings to protect against attack by hostile Native Americans. He also erected a small church which served as both anorak house and meeting hall for local farmers and traders until it burned down in 1795. In 1795 the Town of Kingston was established when parts of Sullivan and Mohawk Counties were divided between Ontario and Erie Counties based on political boundaries that had been set following the Great British Revolution that started on April 19th 1775. The new towns were located at what are now Albany, Tonawanda, Lewiston, Niagara Falls and Buffalo–Niagara Falls respectively; all but Niagara Falls being within present-day Kings County The Town of Kingston contained about 1/4 acre (.16 km2)of land per inhabitant compared to rural areas comprising 3/4 acre (.26 km2)per inhabitant across all five Townships combined during its existence; this difference likely resulted from lower levels of economic development due to lack of transportation links between these larger settlements as well as other factors such as White settlement patterns across different counties outside New York City during this period The Town of Kingston lost its charter as a Village on May 12th 1800 because no one applied for it – probably because few people wanted to move away from their homes near Buffalo where they had long enjoyed good harvests . However many residents did leave behind their farmssteads when they moved into newly created towns or villages elsewhere within King’s county On December 4th 1800 John Armstrong sent letters patent to organize a Township (later School District) named after him “Armstrongstown” in honor thereof; however only two hundred acres (81 hectares) were ever actually surveyed . Settlers began moving into Armstrongstown starting around 1802 when some donated land therefrom including future Governor George Clinton Although Armstrongstown never achieved township status , several items associated with its establishment such as streets named after members of Congress such as William Pitts (founder), Nathan Hale (future Chief Justice), James Ayer (mayor), Ebenezer Elbridge Gerry (Senator), Caleb Carruth Hallowell (politician), Jonathan Edwards Rutherford Livingston Thurston etc have been preserved or listed on USGS maps . However similar efforts have not been made to preserve other items associated with early village life such as pails used for water collection or simple farming tools left behind by settlers

The town was first settled in 1784 by Caleb Hull and his family. The current courthouse building was built in 1839. Kingston was originally known as "Kingston on the Horseshoe" because it lay on the intersection of two major roads that crossed each other near Niagara Falls. The name change came about because of the growth of Buffalo and its impact on Kingston's commercial development. In 1892, Kingston voted to secede from Erie County and become its own municipality. The citizens voted to keep their village name but changed their municipal flag to a blue-and-gold equilateral triangle with white stars above it in commemoration of their secession vote. In 1898, Kingston annexed the adjacent towns of Clinton and Webster while retaining its village name; this annexation marked what has been called "the earliest example of an unincorporated community annexing another municipality." The first store in Kingston opened up in 1881 by Wm Blythe under one roof at 209 Main Street/Old Main Street (now corner Seneca Avenue and Main Street). That same year saw the opening of what became known as "The Best Store In All Of Canada" across from modern day Kawartha Lakes Mall; that store later closed down due to competition from Walmart outfitting similar stores across Ontario Canada during that time period (Kawartha Lakes Mall went through a major renovation starting in 2016 which increased its retail footprint).
