Nevertheless, fishing and commerce continued to be major sources of income during this time period for many families who resided within walking distance or driving range of local mills that produced flour, cloth and other goods used throughout Western New York during these difficult times. In 1886-87, work began on Queensbury Dam upstream from modern-day Kingston when engineers realized that if they could divert water away from Niagara River then they could create Lake Ontario through engineering feats such as this one which ultimately led to increased electricity production at Niagara Falls due to enlarged storage capacity created by Queensbury Dam including: intake into Mill Pond No. 2 (now Canandaigua Creek), conveyance along Canandaigua Creek northward via two tunnels under high ground near present day Syracuse before entering lake at present day Seneca Lake; release over Hiawatha Reservoir onto broad delta area now called Old Fort Cayuga before terminating near present day Greeneville Township where Lockport now stands
