Kenmore, New York is a town in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,746 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from a Cherokee word meaning "place where there are many hogs." The first evidence of human activity in Kenmore Township dates back to about 9000 BC when Paleo-Indians hunted and killed animals in what is now the townsite. In 1805, Colonel George Washington purchased 2/3 of the township from Nicholas Morris for $1 cash and developed it into an agricultural community. By 1820, however, most farmers had abandoned the township because of bad soil conditions and low prices for cornmeal and other crops. In 1827, surveyor John Laird reported that he had found good land on which to build a Log Cabin Village. This village became known as Kenmore in 1830 after local patriot Major General James Kenmore donated land for its construction. In 1832, surveyor John Ladd reported finding coal seams near Farmington (now part of Hamburg), so mining began on nearby hillsides. By 1850, over 100 coal mines were operating in Berks County. In 1861–1864 Union soldiers burned down 11 homes during their winter encampment near present-day Lancaster; this event is also recognized as the start of Shenango Valley Campaign (1862). On March 3rd 1863 Confederate General Robert Ewell's army marched through town chanting "libel us not" while passing through on their way north to Gettysburg; this event is also recognized as Kenmore's incorporation into Borough of Lancaster on July 1st 1865 by Special Act No 5136 entitled “An act adopting certain boundaries within limits herein prescribed” By 1870 much industry had disappeared due to competition from steel production in Pennsylvania and Ohio; however small businesses continued to thrive until World War II when large Scale Manufacturing came into existence with plants such as Bethlehem Steel Corporation located near Lancaster Airport . After 1945 these industries gradually went away leaving only small scale manufacturing operations still extant today
