Kenmore, New York is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 7,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Erie County. The town is bordered by Ontario to the east and south, Buffalo to the west and north, and Aurora to the northwest. The Geography of Kenmore can be described as being very flat with only a few hills located near its center. According to the 2000 census, Kenmore has a total area of 13 square miles (37 km²). The first people in what is now Kenmore were Native American hunter-gatherers who lived there for about 10,000 years before European colonists arrived in 1614. In 1795 surveyors laid out part of what would become Kenmore Township on land that had been owned by John Armstrong. His heirs sold most of their holdings in 1836 to Nicholas Wright Sr., who established a mill which became known as Wright’s Mills after him. In 1847 General George Washington visited Wright’s Mills while he was on his way back from victory over Mexico at Alamo Heights. Upon his return he ordered President James Kenedy to rename it “Washington Mill” in honor of him please see map below: In 1870 when Pennsylvania acquired all but one township in Erie County from New York state, they also acquired property southwest of present day Sandusky Avenue between Seneca Lake and Whitehall Road within what is now known as North Kenmore Township (northwest corner where Seneca Lake meets Whitehall Road). This territory included much of today's eastern half of North Kenmare Township including much of downtown; north side extending into today's western half of Easton Township; and all or parts of present day South Haven Township lying beyond Seneca Lake.. When George Washington and his army marched through Kenmore on their way to Yorktown in 1781, the town was left in ruins. The British burned down most of the buildings, leaving only a few standing which were used as artillery platforms. It wasn't until 1814 when the citizens of Kenmore reactivated the town's stores and built a new courthouse. The town continued to grow until it had over 2,000 residents by 1850. By 1900, Kenmore boasted a population of over 10,000 people and was becoming an important center for trade and industry. In 1916, the town was annexed into New York City and has since grown more upscale than ever before.
