To commemorate this event, the town erected a targeting stand on Elm Street for use by visitors during the fair. Kenmore is a town in the Town of Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 20,552 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The town was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 and named after John Kenmore, an Englishman who had been ambassador to Holland and then married a daughter of the late Albany congressman Nicholas-Jacques Conte. In 1673, one year after his father's death, John's grandson Samuel bought out John's share in the town for $2 per acre (0.94 kg/ha). The first store opened in 1701 on what is now Main Street and became known as "The Mercantile Exchange". A post office called Kenmore was established in 1711, and stayed open until 1892. In 1818, land totaling .6 acres (0.20 ha) were acquired from Jacob Israel de Mohawk for $1 per acre (0.40 kg/ha). This area would later become Elmhurst Cemetery and be developed into one of New York City's most affluent neighborhoods with fine mansions built between 1830 and 1860 by wealthy merchants such as Cornelius Vanderbilt Sr., Andrew Carnegie, Adolphus Wackerhagen and others. During World War II many Kenmore residents took up military service; some even went to prison camps during that time due to their patriotism towards their country After the war ended many people decided they wanted to move away from downtown so they did not have to see all the violence going on there which continued right up until recently
