In 1830, they moved to a new site on the west side of Mohawk Creek near where today's Boulevard of the Arts stand today. The original village consisted of just a few homes and a millrace which served as the town's water supply and power plant until 1873 when an electric line was built to connect Buffalo withNiagara Falls The town was incorporated on February 14, 1881 by act of the New York State Legislature. It became one of twenty-seven towns in Erie County when it was created from parts of four other towns: Batavia (1875), Hamburg (1878), Lockport (1879) and Salamanca (1882). From its incorporation until 1954 it included part of what is now Elmira Kenmore has experienced many dramatic changes over its history including being annexed by Syracuse in 1951; losing its charter status as an independent community on December 9th 1959 due to annexation into Syracuse; gaining cityhood on May 12th 1984 following a referendum vote; experiencing significant growth with annexations from Oswego and West Seneca over time; becoming one of two villages within Buffalo Township following that township's merger with Darien Township in 2006; becoming fully city-led again following another referendum vote on September 20th 2014 effective since then
