Kenmore is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 21,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls-Toronto metropolitan area. The town is named for George Washington Kenmore, one of two brothers who founded the village in 1784. The first settlers were farmers and their families who arrived from Connecticut in 1786. They built log cabins and started a small mill on the west side of the Chenango River. In 1810, they erected a large frame courthouse which served as a model for later buildings in the community. In 1813, they voted to become an incorporated village and adopted its current name of Kenmore. In 1840, during the American Civil War, General John Aiken led an army into Kenmore to capture Fort Erie; however, his troops withdrew before reaching it because of lack of food and munitions. Union forces again invadedKenmore on July 6th 1863 when Confederate General Robert Ewing attacked Fort Niagara near present day Rochester while Union Major General James Harney was besieging that same fortification. Aftermath of this battle left many dead including four members of the Kenmore family: George Washington Kenmore (baptized December 12th 1738 – died October 10th 1826), John Harker KenMORE (baptized February 15th 1792 – died December 26th 1856), Martha Jane KENMORE (October 25th 1794 – died November 2nd 1865) and her husband Lewis KENMORE (November 5th 1700 – died May 11th 1830). Aiken's army passed through Kennemer on their way back to Albany but found no dwellings or troops available so he abandoned his military objective and returned home without taking any prisoners or trophies like other Confederate generals had done before him such as Robert Ewing at Niagara Falls fame

After independence, Kenmore became a prosperous center of trade and industry along the Mohawk River before becoming an agricultural center around 1900 with extensive land holdings near Battle Creek and other villages on the riverbank. Residential development began in response to increasing demand for housing amid suburban growth throughout New York City following World War II. In 2007, local officials announced plans to demolish much of downtown Kenmore due to concerns about its age and decrepit infrastructure; however, public opposition quickly developed and preservationists successfully lobbied city officials to delay demolition until further study could be done—a decision that has resulted in continued use of downtown as a retail district as well as a popular spot for outdoor concerts and events year-round. Today, KenMORE continues to play an important role within both local economy and global culture through its impact on art exhibitions throughout the world (the latest being London’s Tate Modern), vibrant arts scene (including multiple music festivals each year), nationally acclaimed restaurants (such as Benares Grill & Wine Bar) and unique shopping opportunities (including several antique stores).
