On January 1, 1840, it became a village and was renamed Kenmore after Amos Kendall who donated land for the village center and two churches. On July 11th 1910 an earthquake struck western NY killing 16 people and injuring 500 with over 60% loss of life from buildings in Chenango County alone including many homes destroyed or severely damaged such as George Washington High School which still stands today (now known as Alfred Purdey Elementary). Aftershock damage continued throughout northeast NY into early 1911 with total losses reaching $2 million dollars including damages to 3 thousand businesses located within one mile radius of epicenter

Kenmore is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 9,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1614 and named after Hendrik de Kenmore, an officer with the Dutch East India Company. In 1792, the Town of Romeford merged with Kenmore. In 1815, when Canada became a republic, Kenmore became part of the new country and its first mayor was John Armstrong (1785-1816). In 1837 it incorporated as a village. On July 1st of that year it lost its charter as a village to Niagara Falls Village and on December 15th 1959 it regained its charter as a town. The growth of tourism has played a major role in recent history for Kenmore; many businesses have been founded or continued operation because tourists visit the area for activities such as swimming in the Niagara River or hiking on nearby hillsides. The town also has several historical landmarks that are open to visitors including: Kenneth House (a Federal architecture Gothic Revival mansion), Elmira Armory (an early 20th century brick building), Beechcroft Hill Mansion (also known as "Beechcroft" due to its height), White Sands Missile Range Park and more recently Iroquois Hall which serves as both home base for troops stationed at Lackland Air Force Base and also functions as an event center for various community events
In 1815, the first white man to set foot on what is now Kenmore was Alexander McKay. McKay and his two companions, John Dickinson and James Fenton, explored the area that is now Albany before reaching Syracuse. In 1816, they founded the town of Canandaigua on the grounds of an abandoned Mohawk village. The town was named in honor of General George Washington's nephew who served as its commonweal during the American Revolution. The town's first store opened in 1824. In 1830, a post office was established in Canandaigua; it remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1868. The population of Canandaigua increased rapidly due to land speculation and agricultural production; however, by 1840 it had declined to about 150 residents. A school was started in Canandaigua in 1840 but closed within a year because there wasn't enough money for repairs and replacements
