The first settler in the area that would become Kenmore was David Potter in 1814. He and his family later moved to what is now Rochester and started a farm with four cows and twenty pigs. In 1825, John Potter bought the farm from David Potter and changed its name to Kenmore after himself. In 1861, Daniel Webster moved toKenmore from Geneva, Ontario as an inspector for the Erie Canal project. He soon became known as one of Buffalo's most important political leaders. In 1865, when Niagara Falls came into being as a result of the American Civil War (1861-1865), businesses within the town quickly sprang up to take advantage of the new industry:steamboats departing all hours of operation for both pleasure and business travel on both sides of Niagara Falls; tourist traps such as "The falls" on Main Street; hotels like The Queen Victoria Inn which were popular among visitors during this time period; gift shops like Hometown souvenirs store; and even a minstrel show at Oneonta State Park every day except Wednesday night during summer months (the only time). During this time period there also began construction on what would become Kennicott Road which ran through central Kenmore until it reached Clintonville about two miles south in 1887. This road was developed primarily by farmers who needed access to marketable crops closer to their homes or who needed transportation back home during winter months when local roads were either too icy or too wet for travel After years of growth and development not only did Kennicott Road reach Clintonville but so did several other streets that extended into central Kenmore including Dickinson Avenue (now Watkins Avenue), Elmira Boulevard (now Mohawk Avenue), Greenlawn Drive (now Griggs Road), Midland Boulevard (now Barton Road), Ridgeway Boulevard (Now Fenton Parkway) and Westchester Boulevard/Route 9 east of Route 9 near today's downtownKennicott village limits

By 1821, there were 20 stores and 1 brewery in what would be renamed Kenmore after General John Forbes (1763-1842), lieutenant colonel of militia during the American Revolution and one of America's most prominent entrepreneurs. During its long history, Kenmore has seen many changes: it became a village in 1825; it received its current name when it merged with neighboring Sodus to form Kenmore-Sodus Town on January 1, 1957; it became an incorporated town on March 14th of that year; it gained city status on July 15th of 1975; finally becoming an unincorporated community again on November 30th of that year.
