Kenmore is a small town in upstate New York. It's located on the east side of the Mohawk River, about 20 miles from Albany and 45 miles from Buffalo. The population was 2,564 as of the 2010 census. The towns name comes from an Englishman who settled in 1625 near what is now Kenmore Square. He named his tract "Kenmore" after his home country, England. The first settler in what is now Kenmore was John Whitehead, who arrived in 1812. He built a house on the square and started a grist mill that operated until 1827. Other early residents included Amos Bowman (1784-1874), Ebenezer Cook (1811-1892),thirteen children of Livingston Whitcomb and Susannah Stewart, who migrated to America around 1785; and Isaac Smith (1793-1862). Attracted by the fertile ground around it for agriculture, industry began to grow in Kenmore during the 19th century. A gristmill became a flour mill in 1824; brickmaking followed soon thereafter; also tanning, cheese production, lumbering and other businesses developed over time. In 1902-1903 construction began on what would become known as Empire State Plaza—the largest office complex west of Manhattan—and Kenmore proper saw increased development with new housing developments beginning along Front Street between Main and Elm Streets starting in 1925. During World War II there were many plant closings due to wartime shortages but KenMORE did not suffer greatly despite its rural location: even though only 4 percent of all American manufacturing took place within one mile of its homes, local production exceeded 50 percent nonetheless! In recent years there has been some redevelopment including: The Renaissance Place project which includes 575 apartments/condos/townhouses with full water/ sewer service as well as THAAD missile defense installation; KFC Park which will contain an adjacent bowling alley sports complex; Village at Elm Row which includes 83 multi-unit dwellings constructed mostly using precast concrete systems for economy reasons etc.; Oneonta Mall being redeveloped into mixed use retail/residential/office space with additional parking garages etc.; Finally nearby Cascadia Commons shopping center finally going online late last year complete with grocery stores including Publix Super Markets & Walmart
