Kenmore, New York is a small town located in westchester county, New York. The population was 6,522 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls-Oneida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Kenmore was Nicholas Romanoff who arrived there in 1785. He and his family built a cabin on the east side of town. The first sawmill in what is now Kenmore started operation in 1814 and produced flour for local markets as well as goods for export to England. During the American Civil War, many residents of Kenmore sided with the Unionist cause over that of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. This caused some friction between citizens and government officials, but nothing came to a head until after Lincoln's reelection in November 1860. That December Abraham Lincoln appointed John D Trotter as commissioner of Internal revenue; Trotter had close ties to abolitionists and wanted to crack down on smuggling operations run by slaveowners and their sympathizers within the slave trade industry. Trotter took office and ordered all stores within two miles of liberty pole (the eastern terminus of the Underground Railroad) closed without warning or explanation – an unenforceable order which effectively curtailed freedom rides undertaken by fugitive slaves seeking refuge from southern slavery. This action helped spur anti-abolitionist sentiment throughout much of western New York during those tense early years following emancipation aboard railcars spidering through rural countryside throughout America In 1865, when President Andrew Johnson issued an executive order abolishing slavery throughout all United States territories except for Utah, only 1 percent of Kenmore's inhabitants voted against it – fewer than any other community in upstate New York . Nevertheless, this vote demonstrated widespread opposition both locally and nationally toJohnson's decision and it played a significant rolein helping him lose re-election four months later . It wasn't until 1886 that John A Forbes acquired land adjoining present day Kenmore on which he founded Forbes Mills Incorporated – one of the earliest commercial enterprises located outside major metropolitan areas during that period . In addition to manufacturing flour, sugar beets (a typeof beet), cheese, eggs etc., Forbes also served as mayor (1892–95)and two terms as governor (1902–5). He also donated land adjacent to his mills for public use including a park now known as Forbes Square . As industrial production increased along with demand for foodstuffs such as flour from abroad due World War I generated more jobs overall across different sectors including manufacturing , farming , transportation etc.; so too did violence erupt throughout Ontario County due largelyto Economic stresses brought about by rapid population growth combined with increased competition from nearby cities ; culminating with mass street protests / martial law measures initiated by then Commissioner Trotter amidst mounting social unrest culminating into several murders subsequent year
The first permanent settler in the Kenmore area was John Nicholson, who arrived in 1798. The next year, James Caldwell purchase land from Nicholson and erected a small log cabin. In 1802, he and his wife Catharine built a more substantial cabin on the current site of their home. In 1815, John Aiken purchased land northwest of present-day Kenmore from Capt. Ebenezer Perry for $1,500. He built a large frame house on the property which remains standing to this day. In 1825, Isaac Morse bought land east of present-day Kenmore from Capt. Ebenezer Perry for $2,000. He founded the town of Morseville on the new land and naming it after himself. In 1828, George Stephenson constructed the first steamboat in America at Fort Niagara on the Ontario River. The boat named "Kenmore" was launched from this dock and ran between Toronto and Buffalo before being sold to Mr. Seward for passage to New York City where it arrived on October 15th 1830 carrying passengers and freight
