The first guns in Kenmore were pistols. The town was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Krieger and his wife, Anna. The first gunsmith in town was Elias White. In 1802, John Haggerty bought a piece of land east of the village and started building a mill on it. In 1807, he married Eliza Lovegood and moved to the new house on the mill property. In 1819, Isaac Gray bought a large tract of land near the village from Nicholas Krieger and began developing it into what is now eastern Kenmore Township. He built several homes, including one known as the Old Courthouse which still stands today. In 1822, John Averill established a store at the junction of Elmira Road and Main Street in eastern Kenmore Township. It became one of the most important businesses in town. Averill also served as Mayor from 1824 to 1830 and 1830 to 1833. By 1840, there were over 200 people living in Kenmore township with about 25 schools and other public buildings providing education for all residents along with meat-processing plants (1), grocery stores (2), taverns (3) & hotels (4).

Kenmore has been home to many notable people over its history including: George Washington who founded it in 1785; Martha Washington who lived there until her death in 1801; James Kempton who served as president of Yale University from 1904 to 1907; John Lennon who grew up here; Timothy Leary whose headquarters were located here before he moved to Beacon Hill near Harvard University; Neil Armstrong who first set foot upon Earth at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station outside Palm Beach County when he published "Eagle" magazine's first issue in 1969; Ulysses S. Grant who died at Mount Vernon after serving four terms as President of America from 1868-1876;
The first settler in Kenmore was John Prentiss, who arrived in 1792. He and his wife, Mary, founded a log cabin on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The Prentisses were among the first to grow maize and beans on their land. By 1800, they had three children and began to build up a farmstead around their cabin. In 1802, John Prentiss married Anna Halliday. They soon had six children and started growing crops and raising livestock on their property. In 1825, Abraham Lincoln came toKenmore as part of a wagon train for the rancho Santa Fe road trip from Topeka to Sacramento. He stopped at the Prentiss farm on his way back from Sacramento. When he got there, he found that the family was already dead from smallpox brought over with him on his journey.
