Kenmore is a town in Lewis County, New York, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lewis County and the second largest town in the county. The name "Kenmore" comes from John Halloran's purchase of land in 1686 and his erection of a small cabin there on it. The first residents were two men by the name of Macdonald and Rankin who settled near what is now Main Street in 1812; they were followed by others until only one family remained in Kenmore after 1832 when it became part of Ontario County. In 1837, Josephine Morse moved to Kenmore from Canandaigua. She was one of the earliest women to own property in Lewis County and she raised chickens on her farm until 1861 when she sold it to Averill Killian for $1,000. Killian renamed his farm "Killian's Corners." In 1844, Lillie Chipman bought land east of Main Street and built a log cabin which served as her home until her death in 1908. Her husband later erected an additional log cabin on this lot also known as "Chipman's Cabin." The first post office was established at Chipman's Cabin on October 20, 1840 by Ephraim Ketchum with Pella serving as its temporary address until November 7th when Ebenezer Earle opened a store at what is now Main Street. In 1865-1866 James Sorensen started construction on what became known as Sorensen’s Mill which operated until 1889 when it burned down due to faulty construction along with other mills owned by him during that time frame including: Sorensen’s general store (1865), Sorensen’s blacksmith shop (1868), Sorensen’s flour mill (1869), Sorensen’s sawmill (1870), Hickey & Company stone quarry (1871-75) located just south of present day Route 9 south side of town limits; these mills formed part of the larger Niagara Falls steel production complex that included: Rochester Steel Works(now ArcelorMittal Iron & Coal Company) situated immediately north west of town limits between Railroad Avenue and Canadian River; Peel Foundry(now Allis Chalmers) located east side between Canadian River Road and main street where iron ore was shipped upriver via pipeline; Niagara Falls Mills(now Coeyer Steel & Wire Inc.) situated southwest corner current day Route 9 between Railroad Avenue and Canadian River adjacent to Allis Chalmers factory buildings; Manistee Malting Company(later Jardine Salt Mines) also situated southwest corner current dayRoute 9 between Railroad Avenue and Canadian River adjacent to Manistee Malting Company buildings; finally Denton Shoe Factory(now Sears Holdings Corporation) siting southeast corner current dayRoute 9 between Railroad Ave., Canada River Drive - about midway across river - about halfway across river opposite Denton Shoes plant buildings). From 1865-1929 all these mills produced shoes for Americans made at their boilers within walking distance from their homes although most products were exported back into America during this time frame primarily through Erie Railway Depot located just outside modern day downtown Kenmore! Today remnants still remain including remnants of original brick ovens used to produce kettle corn! This article deals primarily with Timothy Kenmore who purchased much surrounding land subsequent thereto making Kenmore a municipally incorporated village effective February 14th 1860 under charter number 2145 granted by Governor Andrew Johnson based upon recommendations made by Supervisor Rufus Seward Jr.. Timothy had previously resided in Albany but left because he could not agree to be taxed twice within his municipality! On February 14th 1860 Kenneth moved onto his newly acquired lands planting trees!, sowing seeds etc., soon becoming Mayor pro tem... He held this position until 1870 when incumbent Daniel Brouwer won election making Kenneth Deputy Mayor realigning Streets/Alleys etc.. Daniel continued as Mayor for one year before he again lost re-election creating an open seat which subsequently went uncontested for three years prior to being filled by George Wills who had been appointed Commissioner Of Public Roads By then President Ulysses Grant following completionofthe American Civil War
