The town was named for General James Johnson (1764-1827), an American Revolutionary War general and one of George Washington's generals. The original structure in which the town first met was a log cabin built by his father-in-law, Major John Armstrong. A gristmill began operations here in 1824 and soon became one of the most important mills in New York State; it still operates today as a grain millowned by Rice Elevator Corporation In 1841, Mayor Abram Sennett convened a meeting to discuss forming a township to provide local government with more effective regulation and control over economic development within its borders. In response to this call, three men - surveyor David Stephenson (1807-1851), attorney George Hennepin (1793-1859) and banker Elijah Woodford (1800-1865) – laid out a plat for what would become known as "Johnson City". This initial idea was based on land donated by Hamilton's wife Eleanor Bancroft Headland – mother of President James Kapp Andrew Johnson – along with some adjoining land that had been given to her brother Isaac Bancroft Headland Jr., widow of Solomon Northup Saunders II. The first public meeting held to organize Johnson City occurred on February 26, 1841 at the home of Mrs. Eunice Headland; all present voted in favor of forming a township with five members elected at large from individual lots within the boundaries proposed - an unprecedented step for such an early rural community On January 12th, 1843, after many months of committee work and negotiation between various interested parties including representatives from Albany and Buffalo - Congressman Lorenzo Thomas took office as mayoralty candidate & submitted his paper giving reasons why he thought that incorporation into any larger municipality would be undesirable & unwise due to its disadvantages: 1) lack of representation; 2) high taxes required for municipal services; 3) difficulty keeping up with changed civic needs/ preferences; 4) consolidation could lead to job losses or even closures while other businesses thrive because they are not subject to city regulations 5) lack of Dupont Street connection which effectively isolated Johnson City from downtown Syracuse creating difficulties for business growth henceforth . On March 9th 1865 Mayor Thomas delivered his report recommending incorporation into Syracuse but upon reading it himself discovered that there were already too many similar communities nearby (& this wasn't just among congressmen); accordingly he receded from consideration . As fate would have it however another congressman - Salmon Pinchot who also represented Ulster County during that time period - readThomas' report & intervened resulting in incorporation being recommended once again! Incorporation finally happened on November 15th 1870 when voters approved retaining only Village form government while incorporating all surrounding townships into single entity under new name "Syracuse" Today's day & age...
