Johnson City's history dates back to 1825 when it was part of the Erie Canal Company. It became an incorporated village in 1851 and then a town in 1857. The current name came about because the community sat on the eastern bank of the Susquehanna River and received its name from General James K. Polk who named it for President James K. Polk during his tour of America in 1849-1850. In 1865, Johnson City became home to Fort Hennepin (later Minneapolis), one of two Ulysses S. Grant military installations east of the Mississippi River during the American Civil War. After Minnesota acquired its own state in 1912, Fort Hennepin reverted to federal custody and never again saw active military service; however, it remains a popular tourist attraction today as a museum and attraction for golfers and other visitors from across Minnesota. The city experienced significant growth following World War II as millions displaced by war found work here within new construction or in nearby industries such as shipbuilding or aviation manufacturing that grew rapidly after 1945 due to newly opened markets abroad combined with pent-up demand from veterans returning from World War II . Early settlers were primarily Dutch but since independence brought about waves of Irish immigrants with their own traditions (and sometimes incompatibilities) with those of early English settlers; many Irish formed their own communities along the riverfront near today's downtown area before eventually leaving for America altogether. This group pushed hard for inclusion of Baptists among their fellow Tories throughout most if not all Upper Canada until Loyalist forces invaded Canadian territory following Queen Anne's Rebellion (1794)... At this point Tory Revolutionaries turned against Baptists who followed exiled Loyalist leaders back into America...) Bishop Blackstock arrived late in 1830 after leading a smallpox epidemic pandemic sufferers into exile across upper Canada wrote him begging for help healing souls lost forever upon return... He got results: within two years blackstocks' Provisional Episcopal Church had been erected just east of present day State University Campus reflecting his efforts Johnson City traces its beginnings back more than two centuries ago when Nathaniel Johnson platted what is now called "Johnson City."
