In 1906, Johnson City lost its charter due to lack of funding from local citizens. Nevertheless, it continued to exist as a rural community until it was annexed by New York City in 1898.
Johnson City is a small town in the Catskills of New York County. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy (ALBE) Micropolitan Statistical Area. Johnson City is located on the Mohawk River east of Utica and north of Oneonta. The first settler in Johnson City was John Johnson, who arrived in 1792 with his family from Rhode Island. He started a gristmill and built a sawmill on what is now Main Street. The town grew around these two mills until 1824, when an act of Congress designated it as a station for military transportation on the Erie Canal. Johnson City experienced excitement during the American Civil War because General Ulysses S. Grant passed through there en route to battle at Antietam Creek on September 17, 1862. Union forces camped near Johnson City while Confederate General Robert Ewing laid siege to Fort Schuyler in neighboring Oneonta. On October 1, 1865, Union troops stormed Fort Schuyler and captured General Ulysses S. Grant; he was brought back to Washington D.C., where he was given an audience by Abraham Lincoln before being pardoned by him Johnson City's fortunes changed in 1871 when John Fenton bought one of the two mills from Fenton & Son merchants James Hine and Samuel Morse Jr.. In 1872, Fenton also founded what would become known as "the First National Bank". With this new business venture came increased commercial development along Main Street which included breweries, stores and restaurants such as J&J's Theater and Mrs.'s Tavern (later renamed Ford's Theatre). A new electric streetcar line called the " Northern Central" served Johnson City from 1886 until its closure in 1931 In 1902, Andrew Carnegie purchased one of Fenton's other mills for $10 million dollars - this gave birth to what is today MellonBank Corporation (now bankrolling many notable philanthropic endeavors).
