The Johnson City Rifle and Pistol Club was organized on November 25, 1868. The club was the first rifle and pistol range in Johnson City. It opened on a piece of land that is now part of the Science Museum of New York.
Johnson City is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The small town was founded by John Johnson in 1824 and grew rapidly during the late 19th century. The present day Johnson City was named for John Johnson, a former United States Congressman from New York who served from 1881 to 1893. In 1907, the town received its own post office and began growing again as a commercial center. Today, Johnson City is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Upstate New York due to its unique history and architecture. John Johnson's original settler farmstead can be found on current-day Highland Avenue just north of Highway 915. The area now known as Johnson City was first populated by Native Americans, primarily the Seneca nation. Afterritional factors caused their populations to dwindle over time and many of these individuals were forced to leave their homes in search of more fertile land. By 1800, only 10% of the population remained within what is now downtown Johnson City. The first white settlers arrived in 1824 when John Clements bought 640 acres of land east of modern-day Route 915 on what is today Highland Avenue south of Interstate 81 (Johnson County). At that time, this area consisted largely of swampy forest which cannot be toured today due to development interests since the early 21st century. However, there are remnants remaining including a mill race which used to power an early sawmill located near where Main Street meets I-81 today; however it closed down circa 1920s or 1930s according to some sources . A few years later, James Armstrong purchased 2200 acres adjacent to present-day Highland Avenue from Mr. Clements for $10 per acre plus costs associated with building roads and other infrastructure necessary for settlement; thus Armstrong's site became known as "Armstrong's Purchase." Armstrong also built up some buildings along present-day Highland Ave between I-81/Highway 915 Boulevard and Main Street dating back to about 1830 or 1840 according to local historians familiar with the matter at that time... These structures included a smithy which still stands on Main Street near intersection with West First Street* (*This information came courtesy Tom Kester) In 1851 James Auld bought 2400 acres adjoining Armstrong's Purchase from Mr Clements for $22 per acre plus additional costs associated with developing it into a township...A year later Purdy & Henderson purchased 4500 acres extending into what is currently Livingston County from General James Fenton...Purdy & Henderson were successful entrepreneurs who opened several stores in nearby Utica before selling most all their holdings in 1865 including portions including parts or all of what is now Livingston County lying within those boundaries... During this period Albany had become crowded with people seeking new opportunities whereas Livingston county offered much more open space without tributaries such as Buffalo Falls making it attractive for farmers like Purdy & Henderson who could simply build upon it rather than Fragments thereof becoming inhospitable over time!(*This information came courtesy Tim Smith*) In 1870 Yates platted his 7000 acre gridiron tract northeast corner Henry Douglass Rd./Route 915 Blvd., thence connecting via longitude surveyed line w/ Rumson excursion ground across Raritan River

Over time, different aspects of life have been central to its identity including its annual summer festival called "Festival du Linge", which celebrates fiber arts; its rich history; its vibrant architecture; and its wide variety of services including health care and education
Johnson City was settled in 1792 by Colonel James Johnson and his men. The area became a part of the United States in 1803. In 1825, the town was renamed for General Andrew Johnson, who served as President from 1828 to 1841. The city was incorporated on February 7, 1865, and became the capital of New York State in 1898.
