In 1892, a Johnson City man named W.H. Phillips invented the pepper spray cannon, which was used to protect law enforcement officers in the city. In 1902, another Johnson City man, J.F. Sowers, created the first© stun gun© and it became widely used by police and other emergency responders across the United States. The pepper spray cannon was eventually replaced by tear gas grenades in 1962 after they became more reliable and less dangerous. On October 4th of that year, an angry crowd of about 100 people gathered outside of a local restaurant afterlearning that their food had been contaminated with dioxins from a chemical plant down town. This spike in violence throughout the city followed shortly thereafter as angry crowds began throwing objects at police officers and vandalizing businesses while chanting "We want democracy!" The rioting soon escalated as protesters took to the streets carrying pistols and shotguns while others looted stores and set fires across downtown Johnson City. As night fell, tensions continued to high as skirmishes broke out between police forces and protesters before finally coming to a peaceful end around 2 am that morning under orders from Mayor John Beasley himself. The event is now considered one of New York's most seminal moments in its history; it effectively brought an end to what is known as the "Johnson City Riot"

In 1861, Union General Ulysses S. Grant passing through New York heard about Confederate forces retreating towards Richmond and decided to pursuit them instead; he routed them at Battle Hill outside present-day Lewiston (now Auburn). As a result of this victory, Union forces came into contact with local farmers who supplied them with food and munitions as well as financial assistance during their campaign against Southern Rebellion; this helped Johnson City grow rapidly into one of America’s most important mining towns during this period. Following the end of World War II, Johnson City continued to experience rapid growth thanks to new technological advances which allowed for increased production at its mines and mills; this contributed significantly to its prosperity throughout the postwar period until it suffered significant economic decline in 1973 when Japanese investors took over much of its industry. However, due to recent efforts by local authorities including establishment of a development district within the town limits which has been successful in attracting investment back into city coffers along with increasing job opportunities for locals since 2007,[1] Johnson City is slowly but surely beginning to rebound again after experiencing some rough patches during its difficult past few decades – making it one determined community that looks forwardto future successes!

The present courthouse also served as municipal hall until 1903 when it became known as the Alexander Hays House Museum.] During World War II, Johnson City played an important role in supporting combat units stationed nearby at North Africa's El Alamein and Sicily's Anzio beaches. Many citizens volunteered their services and many homes were used as barracks or storage facilities for military equipment or personnel during this wartime period. In 1957, Mayor Floyd Bostwick dedicated a new civic center which has served as both local government headquarters and cultural center since its dedication.. Johnson City is now considered a thriving community with active businesses, including several large retailers such as Macy’s, Sears & Roebuck, Lowe’s Home Hardware and BJ’s Wholesale Club; multiple restaurants including Pizzeria Italiano (owned by Facebook), Greek restaurant Delta Diner (owned by KFC) and Chinese restaurant China Garden; two bowling alleys; one golf course; three private schools – Smith Academy (grades PreK-8th); Mrs Edwards School (grades 9-12th); Kirstenbosch Intermediate School (grades 1-6th). There are also numerous small businesses providing support services such as home health aides/nurses/personal assistants; agricultural contractor service; ambulance services; dog walking/fairs/picnics/etc.; Parks & Recreation Department operates a full range of programs including: summerfestivals(July - September), fallfestivals(October - December), carnival(January - February), fireworks show(March 3rd), ice skating rink(April 5th)and more!
The town of Johnson City was founded in 1792 by General David Walker. It was named for him and his wife, Maria. The town developed as a farming community and became an important trade center during the American Revolution. In 1809, it became the capital of New York State. Johnson City remained an important commercial and political center until the early 21st century.
