On November 5, 1907, voters approved incorporation by popular vote with an even split between men and women (the first time this had ever been done in New York). The city has since grown rapidly through annexation of surrounding municipalities including Overlooks-Lenox Hill (1981), North Unionville (1994), South Unionville (2002), East Elmira (2007) and White Plains (2011). The city experienced significant growth during World War II because wartime production centered around shipbuilding and aircraft manufacture in nearby Schenectady and Buffalo while Johnson City remained largely unaffected because there were no major military installations in the area at that time.
