The townspeople soon realized that they needed more than just general assistance in order to develop their new settlement; they also needed someone to provide them with leadership and direction during their early years. This person wasMajor Benjamin Goldsmith himself. Goldsmith quickly became recognized as one of the most important figures in earlyJohnsonCity history; he helped organize local militia units (the "Green Beret" battalion), developed plans for township government (including its first courthouse), led efforts to build schools and churches (which were finally completed in 1840), funded local projects such as the erection of a toll bridge across the Mohawk River (and later replaced by a traffic signal system) and created or co-founded numerous businesses including two banks (the First National Bank & Trust Company) and two newspapers: The Republican (1792-1881) and The Albany Enterprise (1801-2004). During his lifetime, Goldsmith donated over $2 million dollars towards various civic projects throughout JohnsonCity - many which remain active today such as maintaining its original architecture including its landmark courthouse which still stands today – as well as creating or sponsoring numerous annual events includingquailerence golf tournaments/fairs/festivals etc., making him one of New York State's most significant philanthropists during his time period.
