Johnson City, New York is a small town located in the Towns of Onondaga and Levy counties in central New York. The population was 5,872 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Onondaga County and home to the Johnson City Museum. The town was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 on land that now includes parts of Onondaga and Yates counties. The first post office was established here in 1785. In 1814, after the Treaty of Utica ended the War of 1812, General Philip Schuyler ordered all soldiers from New York to leave Johnson City except for a detachment under Colonel John Armstrong who garrisoned it until 1830. In 1862, during the American Civil War, Union forces burned down what is now downtown Johnson City while occupying this part of Onondaga County. Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered Major General William Tecumseh Sherman to protect this strategic supply point on his march through west-central New York as he planned his general offensive against Confederate troops retreating southward from Gettysburg Mountain. Johnson City saw its most significant development beginning in 1907 when developer Wirt Hargrave built two large blocks north of Main Street on what is now known as Riverside Drive (now State Route 20). This area became known as "Hargrave's Hill." The town experienced rapid growth during World War II because new factories were erected here including one belonging to Ford Motor Company which produced munitions for Allied forces in Europe; also located here were several banks and other commercial buildings used for military purposes such as an armory and aircraft maintenance facilities. During World War II many Japanese Americans living in nearby Roslyn Heights were interned here until 1945 after being forced into slavery by their captors; they eventually moved back to their original homes after liberation but remain important figures in local history today. After World War II things slowed down somewhat but have continued to grow more slowly since then with a few exceptions; notably a notable increase in housing prices which has led some residents to abandon their dwellings altogether over time.
