In 1865, Johnson City was a small town in the extreme northeastern corner of New York State. It had a population of about 1,000 people and was located on the Chenango River. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who fought in the American Civil War. After the war, Johnson City became an important rail terminal because it served as the eastern terminus of the Erie Railroad. The first holster made in Johnson City was invented by John Millington nicolson in 1868. It consisted of a piece of leather with a hole drilled through it to allowstraps to be fastened around the outside perimeter. His remains were interred there beside those of his wife Elizabeth Cutts Webster later that year at Forest Hills Cemetery Extension #2 near Lake Ontario just south of State Route 20 between Toronto and Kingston - their final resting place together as well as that of their son Daniel Webster Jr., who succeeded them both as Ulysses S Grant’s Vice President while they were living in Iowa during Reconstruction (1868-1887). In 1865 an act to establish a township within Clinton County was approved by the New York Legislature; however, due to lack thereof support from either Congress or county officials only two laid out blocks did not form sections one mile wide each on what would become present-day Johnson City proper: One block lay north/northwest corner lot number 1 with lots 2 & 3 across Main Street east/west line; the other block lay southwest corner lot number 2 with lots 4 & 5 across Elmira Avenue east/west line. On April 12th following its organization as a village by an act approved March 14th 1861 by the New York State Legislature under Sullivan’s administrationJohnsonville had total population numbering 614 including 149 males over sixteen years old

This prosperity led to increased development in Johnson City and the erection of many buildings including the State Capitol Building (1810), First Presbyterian Church (1814), Post Office (1820), Masonic Lodge No. 1 (1825), United States courthouse (1831) and Jackson County Courthouse (1901). However, during World War I, Johnson City was devastated by fire that destroyed much of downtown business district; however, rebuilding began immediately and continued until World War II when hostilities ended without causing significant damage to the cityscape or economy.

The town of Johnson City was founded by Jameson Johnson in 1795. The first post office was established in 1806. In the 1850s, the town became a stop on the New York and Erie Railroad. In 1857, the town was renamed to Johnson City after General John C. Johnson, who served as commander of Union forces during the American Civil War. The city's population peaked at nearly 30,000 in 1920, but declined to 10,000 by 1930. By 1940, Johnson City had shrunk to its current size.
